Faculty/Staff/Scholars

Department/Hiring Unit Admins: To initiate a request for a visiting J-1 Scholar, use the GU LOGIN for the International Portal with your campus credentials and submit a New Sponsorship Request. If you have already started your request, login to the International Portal to continue working on your existing request.

Scholars/Employees: Please review the information below based on your visa processing type with Gonzaga University.


  1. New Sponsorship Request is initiated by Human Resources to determine the appropriate employment-based visa category.
  2. After approval of the sponsorship request for H-1B processing, the scholar/employee will receive notification to login and submit all information directly.
  3. Human Resources (HR) will communicate with the employee regarding the status of the request and filing with USCIS.
  1. New Sponsorship Request (GU department/hiring unit-initiated) - Department admins must submit this request to ISSS to determine the appropriate employment-based visa category.
  2. After approval of the sponsorship request for J-1 processing, the department admin and exchange visitor will receive notification to login and both submit additional information.
  3. International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) will request clarification if needed, before issuing a new DS-2019.
  4. After the J-1 arrives at Gonzaga, all additional requests will be managed in the International Portal for J-1 immigration status.
  1. New Sponsorship Request is initiated by ISSS to determine the appropriate employment-based visa category for the non-GU sponsored fellow.
  2. After approval of the sponsorship request for J-1 processing, the exchange visitor will receive notification to login and submit additional information/documents about the non-Gonzaga paid appointment.
  3. International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) will request clarification if needed, before issuing a letter of invitation for the Provost to sign.
  4. After the J-1 arrives at Gonzaga, all additional requests will be managed in the International Portal for J-1 immigration status.
